Some fun Easter facts:
- Easter is named after Eastre, an Anglo-Saxon goddess. The symbols of the goddess were the hare and the egg
- Easter is the second biggest confectionery holiday, following Halloween.
- Over 90 million chocolate Easter bunnies are produced each year.
- The first chocolate eggs were made in Germany in the 19th century.
- The first Easter baskets were made to imitate bird nests.
- In Norway, solving murder mysteries is very popular during Easter.
- Easter is known by different names across the world. Some of them are: English - Easter, French - Paques, Spanish - Pascua, Italian - Pasqua, Albanian - Pashke, German - Ostern, Greek - Pascha, Norway - Paaske, Holland - Pasen and Swedish - Pask.
- Hot cross buns, made by European monks, are counted amongst the earliest Easter treats. They were given to the poor people, during the month of Lent.
- Every year, the White House hosts an Easter Egg Roll on the front lawn. The tradition was started by President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1878.
- Easter is celebrated at different times by Eastern and Western Christians. That’s because the dates for Easter in Eastern Christianity are based on the Julian Calendar.
